Lately I've been thinking about how celebrity culture has taken a strange turn over the past decade: we now have a flotilla of celebrities that exist exclusively to be hated. Seriously, who likes Paris Hilton? No one. She exists to be despised, and an entire economy has developed around this hatred. Saying you hate Paris Hilton is about as original as saying you like The Beatles. (And realizing it is the definition of snark.)
