Across the Universe

Just when you thought hoped boomer nostalgia had become passé, along comes the film Across the Universe, which strangely fetishizes the Beatles while still looking not quite horrible.

We ain't dead yet, maaaan. And I gotta admit that watching punks turn 40 has given me small pleasure. Your time is coming, dude.

Of course it doesn't look horrible... it's a Julie Taymor project! Despite the fact that I think she's an unprecedented genius with imagery (Titus, for example... genius), part of me strongly suspects she cribbed the Beatles idea from Cirque du Soleil...

I saw the trailer and I must admit I totally fell in love with this movie. Kudos to Julie Taymor for being brave enough to "mess" with the Beatles. I also wanna make babies with Jim Sturgess...

I'm all for taking on the Fabs, mashing them up, giving them new life and new translation. If anything, the Cirque du Soleil soundtrack didn't go far enough in reinterpreting their stuff. But I sure hope this goes beyond You Say You Want a Revolution sentimentality and breaks some ground. Putting the Beatles to a '60s movie isn't so daring. But Julie Taymor? I'll give it a shot.
