Browse Goods
I don't know if this is a good idea or not, but someone built an online store that uses the zoom in/out interface of online mapping sites: BrowseGoods.com.

I personally like the idea, but wish that instead of breaking the groups down by brand a couple of levels down, they'd break the groups down by identifying characteristics. For example, when I'm shoe shopping and know I want a loafer, I don't necessarily look for a brand. I create a mental list of characteristics (black or brown? square toe, round toe? tassles or no tassles? etc.) and then find those shoes. That would probably be a nightmare for the metadata folks, but it would make that type of shopping experience easier.
