Vitamin Water

File under: random thing that seems worth knowing. In its biggest purchase ever, Coke is buying the maker of Vitamin Water. In other news, NYT had an interesting Coke vs. Pepsi infographic.

Unless I'm totally misreading the graphic, NYT shows Pepsi winning the Peruvian market with light-blue (25%). Interesting, since Wikipedia shows *neither* drink dominating, and Pepsi in a very distant 4th place: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Inka_Cola#Pepsi_downfall

Now, it's quite possible the NYT has better data than Wikipedia (nah), but having travelled through Peru I can tell you Inca Kola and Coke clearly dominate, with nary a Pepsi to be seen anywhere.

You're misreading the graphic. Pepsi is winning Peru -- in the battle of only those two sodas. It's not saying that Pepsi or Coke are #1 in every country -- it's showing which of the two is ahead (and with how much market share).

Well, my point was more along the lines of "I'd be surprised if Pepsi was actually outselling Coke in Peru" and some anecdotal evidence to back up that claim ;)

But since I don't have any *actual* evidence, I'll shut up now...

the sf chronicle had a piece in it's celebrity news today that 50 cent owned something like 10% of glaceau. haven't seen that reported anywhere else though.
