Does he need a double scotch to string all of those disjointed memories together, or has he had two already and that's the problem?

I'm reading The Kingdom and the Power. In it Talese says something like - while the vice of the other New York papers was alcohol, the vice of the New York Times is women. But he goes on to describe an after hours drinking club that convened in a room behind the managing editor's office during the Turner Catledge days.
